Opportunities currently on hold

Befriending volunteers

Role purpose

To share social and cultural activities with newcomers to Scotland and offer informal support with English language learning, on a 1-1 and/or group basis, as part of our Welcoming Friendship programme. Meetings often take place in newcomers’ family homes.

Skills and qualities needed

Interest in supporting others, good listening and interpersonal skills, patience, reliability and flexibility, respect for other cultures, social and cultural interests that you can share with others, interest in developing your skills and reflecting on experiences.

Commitment

Befriending pairs usually meet up on a weekly basis for a few hours. We ask befriending volunteers to commit to meeting up over a 9 month period though we hope that friendships will continue beyond this. We are particularly interested in hearing from people who are settled in Edinburgh and plan to be here long term.

Support and Training

Induction given and ongoing support and supervision offered.

We are not recruiting befriending volunteers at present. However, feel free to fill in the Befriending volunteer application form and we will get back to you when we are ready to recruit again.

Women’s group volunteers

Role purpose

The Welcoming delivers women’s groups in various locations across the City of Edinburgh.

Role Purpose: To help to facilitate a relaxed, accessible and social space for newcomer women to Edinburgh to improve English, meet new friends, get involved in relevant projects and become a meaningful part of their local communities.

Skills and qualities needed

Interest in supporting others, good listening and interpersonal skills, patience, reliability and flexibility, respect for other cultures, social and cultural interests that you can share with others, interest in developing your skills and reflecting on experiences.

Commitment

Volunteers are encouraged to commit to a weekly two-hour women’s group session for an initial three-month period, with the opportunity to extend.

The Welcoming understands that volunteer time availability varies greatly, and is occasionally interrupted by personal circumstances that are avoidable. Our Befriending Facilitator is open to discussing time availability with all new volunteer applicants.

Support and Training

Volunteers can expect:

  • to receive volunteer induction training within their first month
  • quarterly women’s group planning meetings
  • the opportunity for one-to-one support and supervision with the Befriending Facilitator as and when required, by phone or in person
  • the opportunity for personal development through relevant Welcoming volunteer learning sessions and ad-hoc events.

We are not recruiting women’s group volunteers at present. However, feel free to fill in the Women’s group volunteer application form and we will get back to you when we are ready to recruit again.
