Mahmoud’s story at The Welcoming
Starting a new life in a new country comes with challenges that aren’t always visible. New systems, a new language, and often, a sense of starting again from scratch.
For many of our members, The Welcoming is one of the first places they come to for support, but also for connection, confidence and community.
Mahmoud joined us for a work placement earlier this year through his studies at Edinburgh College. What followed was not just an insight into how our services work, but a powerful reminder of why they matter.
“From the first day, I saw how many people come here”
Mahmoud arrived in Edinburgh at the end of 2023 and is currently studying ESOL to improve his English. As part of his course, he joined The Welcoming for a two-week placement.
Reflecting on those first days, he shared:
“When I started my work placement at The Welcoming Association, I quickly realised how important this organisation is for many newcomers in Edinburgh. From the first day, I saw how many people come to the centre looking for support, advice, and a friendly environment.”
That first impression is one we hear often. A space where people are greeted warmly, supported to understand complex systems, and where small moments of connection begin to build something bigger.
A place to learn, connect and move forward
During his placement, Mahmoud worked alongside our reception team, supporting visitors and helping bridge language barriers.
“I helped with translation for some visitors who needed support communicating with staff, especially when they spoke Arabic. This helped visitors feel more comfortable and understand the information they needed.”
“I also had the opportunity to meet people from many different countries and backgrounds. This experience helped me understand the challenges that many newcomers face when they arrive in a new country.”
He also spent time observing different parts of the organisation, from English language classes to employability support sessions.
“Working at reception allowed me to see how the organisation supports people every day. I learned how important communication, patience, and kindness are when helping others.”
From ESOL classes to one-to-one employability appointments, Mahmoud saw how practical support and human connection go hand in hand.
Supporting confidence, step by step
One part of the placement that stood out was attending our Bridges to Success employability course for parents.
“Attending this course was a unique experience because it showed how the organisation supports families and helps parents build confidence and move closer to employment.”
It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t always happen in big, visible leaps. Often, it’s built week by week, through shared learning, encouragement and the chance to try something new in a supportive space.
The challenges behind the scenes
Mahmoud also reflected on some of the challenges charities like The Welcoming face, from growing demand to limited space and resources.
“Like many charities, The Welcoming faces several challenges. One challenge is the limited number of staff compared to the high demand for services. Many people rely on the organisation for help.”
His perspective highlights something important – that behind every class, appointment or activity is a team working hard to meet increasing need, while making sure every person who walks through the door feels respected and supported.
Looking ahead
Mahmoud also shared thoughtful ideas about how organisations like The Welcoming could continue to grow and support more people:
“There are several possible ways to address these challenges. Increasing the number of volunteers could help support staff and expand services. The organisation could also develop partnerships with other organisations or community centres.
Another possible solution could be expanding the space or opening another location to support more people.
Finally, seeking additional funding opportunities could help the organisation continue providing its valuable services.”
“A sense of community and belonging”
At the heart of Mahmoud’s experience is something we hear time and time again from our members.
“The Welcoming plays an important role in supporting refugees, migrants, and newcomers in Edinburgh. It provides not only practical support but also a sense of community and belonging.”
“My work placement experience helped me understand how important organisations like this are for people starting a new life in a new country. It was a valuable and enjoyable experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn from the team and the community at The Welcoming.”
